E01 – Flow Paddle Stuck Open

What causes Lay-Z-Spa E01?

The Lay-Z-Spa E01 error code indicates that the water flow paddle is stuck in the open position or the water flow sensor is not operating correctly.

Common causes include limescale build-up, debris obstructing the paddle, a damaged flow paddle, a faulty sensor or problems with the associated wiring.

How to fix Lay-Z-Spa E01

If you’ve already tried gently tapping the side of your heater pump, as recommended by Lay-Z-Spa, and the E01 error remains, further investigation may be required.

Further diagnosis:

  1. Disconnect the heater pump from the mains electricity supply.

  2. A competent repairer can remove the outer casing and locate the water flow paddle and sensor.

  3. Inspect the paddle for limescale, debris, sticking or physical damage.

  4. Check the sensor and associated wiring for visible damage or loose connections.

  5. Replace any faulty components with compatible replacement parts.

Important: Never operate the heater pump with its casing removed or bypass the water flow safety sensor.

E02 – No water flow

What causes Lay-Z-Spa E02?

The Lay-Z-Spa E02 error code indicates a water flow problem within the heater pump. This can be caused by a faulty water flow sensor, damaged impeller, worn shaft or shaft bushes, blocked circulation or an electrical fault.

The symptoms can help identify which component may be causing the problem.

E02 – Water flows for 2 seconds, then stops

If water circulates for approximately two seconds before the pump displays E02, this can indicate a faulty water flow paddle or flow sensor.

The pump initially produces water flow, but the sensor fails to detect or correctly register it.

Possible causes:

  • Sticking or damaged water flow paddle.

  • Faulty water flow sensor.

  • Limescale or debris affecting paddle movement.

  • Damaged or loose sensor connections.

A competent repairer can inspect the water flow paddle and sensor and replace faulty components where necessary.

E02 – No water flow at all

If the circulation pump runs but no water flows through the system, the problem may be mechanical.

Possible causes:

  • Damaged or seized water pump impeller.

  • Broken or worn impeller shaft.

  • Worn or damaged shaft bushes.

  • Blocked filters or restricted water circulation.

  • Kinked or obstructed pipes within the inflatable hot tub liner.

Check that the water level is correct, the filters are clean and the inlet and outlet connections are unobstructed.

If the problem remains, the circulation pump’s impeller, shaft and bushes may require inspection or replacement.

E02 – Circulation pump not running

If the circulation pump does not operate at all, the fault may be electrical rather than mechanical.

On Lay-Z-Spa models with non-DC circulation pumps, a faulty transformer or power supply may prevent the pump from receiving power.

Possible causes:

  • Faulty transformer.

A qualified technician can use a multimeter to check the transformer’s output against the manufacturer’s specified voltage and determine whether the circulation pump is receiving the correct power supply.

Important: Disconnect the heater pump from the mains before inspecting or replacing components. Live electrical testing must only be carried out by a suitably qualified person. Never operate the heater pump with its casing removed.

Lay-Z-Spa Error Codes

E01 – Flow Paddle Stuck Open

The Lay-Z-Spa E01 error indicates that the water flow paddle or flow switch is not returning to its correct resting position. This may be caused by a sticking or damaged flow paddle, a faulty flow sensor or an issue with the associated wiring. The fault can prevent the heater pump from operating normally.

E01 Diagnosis, Repair Guide & Replacement Parts →

E02 – Water Flow Error

The Lay-Z-Spa E02 error indicates that the heater pump is not detecting sufficient water flow. Common causes include blocked or dirty filters, restricted water circulation, a faulty water flow sensor, a damaged impeller or a problem with the circulation pump. This error can prevent the hot tub from heating or operating correctly.

E02 Diagnosis, Repair Guide & Replacement Parts →

E03 – Water Temperature Too Low

The Lay-Z-Spa E03 error indicates that the water temperature is too low for the heater pump to operate normally, typically below 4°C. This can occur during freezing weather or when the temperature sensor detects unusually cold water. In some cases, a faulty temperature sensor or associated wiring may also trigger the error.

E03 Diagnosis, Repair Guide & Replacement Parts →

E04 – Water Temperature Too High

The Lay-Z-Spa E04 error indicates that the water temperature is too high, typically exceeding 50°C. This may be caused by overheating, a faulty temperature sensor or an issue with the heater's temperature control system. The heater pump may shut down automatically to prevent further overheating and protect its components.

E12 – Hydrojet pump Water leakage

The Lay-Z-Spa E12 error indicates that water has been detected leaking inside the heater pump. Common causes include worn or damaged HydroJet pump seals, leaking pipe connections, faulty O-rings or damaged internal components. The moisture detection system activates the E12 error and shuts down the pump to prevent further damage. Disconnect the pump from the mains and have the leak repaired before using it again.

E12 Diagnosis, Repair Guide & Replacement Parts →

E19 – Circuit board fault

The Lay-Z-Spa E19 error indicates that the heater pump has detected an electrical circuit overload or overheating within the power board system. Possible causes include a faulty circuit board, overheating electrical components or damaged connections. The pump may shut down automatically as a safety precaution. Disconnect the unit from the mains and have the electrical fault professionally diagnosed before further use.

E19 Diagnosis, Repair Guide & Replacement Parts →

GCF – Ground Fault

The Lay-Z-Spa GCF error (sometimes displayed as 6CF) indicates a problem with the electrical earth connection. Common causes include faulty household wiring, an unsuitable extension lead, a poorly earthed socket or a fault within the heater pump's main circuit board. If the household electrical supply has been checked and confirmed safe, the GCF error may be caused by a faulty circuit board requiring replacement. Do not bypass the electrical safety protection.
